The Energy Transition Plan (ETP) Women in Energy Dialogue, was a one-day event, held at The Art Hotel, Plot 13A, Blk 111, Chief Yesufu Abiodun Oniru Rd, Victoria Island, Lagos-Nigeria, on Thursday the 18th day of May, 2023.
The Women in Energy Dialogue was convened by the Energy Transition Office (ETO) as part of a series of stakeholder-engagement fora aimed at boosting and encouraging private sector participation in the Energy Transition Plan (ETP) developed by the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) as a unified strategy for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7).
The Women in Energy Dialogue convened a rich pool of seasoned female professionals and women groups from within the energy and finance sector. Women and young girls, according to several studies, are intrinsically more prone to the adverse effects of climate change than their male counterparts; yet the energy sector, responsible for energy-related decisions with potentially long lasting effects on women and girls, remains predominantly male. In addition, many women seem to have been influenced to lean away from fields like the energy sector, choosing rather delve into other ‘traditionally accepted’ fields due to cultural perceptions, societal dictates and other such obstacles uniquely placed on the paths of women.
The Women in Energy Dialogue, as a platform, has the potential to amplify the voices of women and girls in the energy sector, educate and create awareness among women on the need for energy transition as well as the opportunities available in the sector, and also draw from their wealth of unique insight, experience, resilience and problem-solving abilities to solve energy transition challenges. Participants and panellists were largely female to lend emphasis to the objective of the Dialogue and their unique contributions and insightful viewpoints justified and buttressed beyond argument, the importance of the convened event.
